what are your 2012 plans for your garden?
so what are your 2012 plans for your garden? now is the time to be planning what your going to plant in the garden this year ,and going through you seed catalogs if you haven't done so already. also i always plan what new shrubs or trees i am going to plant.(fruit bearing of course ) last year i planted 2 paw paws 2 gooseberries 2 rhubarb plants and a 10 ft row of asparagus .
this year i have to replant the replacements for the 2 gooseberries and 1 paw paw that died . i also want to buy 2 apple trees,2 pear trees and 2 cornelian cherry trees , in addition to my normal garden i am also planning to build a raised Hugelkultur bed with expandable sides .
we all know how important it is to feed yourself now and if things ever break down .so my thinking is if everyone shares what their future plans are we all can learn from each other and maybe we can get ideas from one another . so i ask again, what are your 2012 plans for your garden?

Re: what are your 2012 plans for your garden?
Not having much experience with gardening, last year I planted 7 tomato plants in a space (as I later learned) that was only adequate for 3 plants! The plants fought with each other and tried to crowd the others out. I believe that I could have gotten just as much production from 3 uncrowded plants as I did from those crowded 7. So, this year, only three!
I also have a bunch of raspberries that were left to me by the previous owner. I didn't do anything to them last year and they did not produce very well. I have since learned that you have to cut them back during the winter.
I have a place to plant more strawberries. The few I had last year were pretty good, but we only got enough to eat them as they ripened. I am going to plant some more. Maybe we can can some.
The lady we bought this house from told me that she had good luck raising potatoes here, so I may try a few of them.
We have a large Yellow Delicious apple tree on this property. It takes up a lot of space. As it grows, it gets more difficult to prune every year. I'd like to get rid of it and plant several dwarf trees in its place but the wife says: No!"
Anyhow, these are a few of my plans.

Asparagus, 2 kinds of lettuce (boston and romaine) plus a mesculn mix, 2 kinds of beets, a variety of potatoes, tomatoes (cherry, plum/paste and mortgage lifters), basil, cilantro, wheat, 3-4 varieties of pumpkin/squash, luffa gourd, zucchini, yellow squash, 4-5 kinds of beans, carrots, peas, peppers, broccoli, radish, oregano, thyme, chives, onions, echinacea, jerusalem artichoke, dandelion, raspberries, cherries, apples, pears, grapes, sunflowers and a few different kales.
Granted I won't be planting dandelions (they take care of that themselves), but I will be following the recipe from Amy, elsewhere on this forum, and harvesting some to try making jelly. Of course the apples and grapes and cherries and raspberries are just continuation from previous years. I'm sure I missed a few but I don't feel like digging out by box of seeds to check since I'm at least a month or two away from anything yet.

Culex: I envy you for the room you have. I don't! However, farming is a major industry in this area with vast apple and pear orchards plus all kinds of other fruits and vegetables. So, I guess that there is no excuse not to be able to can a lot of produce during the coming summer. I plan to retire in 2 months and that will give my wife and I lots of time to work together and put up a lot more food storage.

Room? Except for the trees all of that is in 2 - 4' x 16' and 1 - 4' x 24' garden plus a small 2' x 6' section of another one. I want to double that amount this year if possible, but I'm doing all of this in a "normal" suburban back yard.

Re: what are your 2012 plans for your garden?
I own a manufactured home in a park. It covers most of my lot. I probably have about 15 by 20 feet and raspberries, strawberries and an apple tree take a large hunk of that. The lady that owned this place previously also planted tons of flowers and my wife likes them. So, we have 4 short raised beds for gardening and one of them is taken by the strawberries.
